Cappadocia
|
|
The ancient region of Cappadocia lies in central Anatolia, between the cities of Nevsehir, Kayseri and Nigde. Three million years ago, violent eruptions of the volcanoes Mt. Erciyes (3,891m) and Mt. Hasan (3,250m) covered the surrounding plateau with tuff, making the landscape rugged and unique, often grotesque, yet strangely beautiful. Wind and weather have eroded the soft volcanic rock into hundreds of strangely shaped pillars, cones and "fairy chimneys", often very tall and colorful. |

The region is an adventurer's paradise. From backcountry hiking and biking, cross-country treks to historical sites, or hot air ballooning over the stark landscape, Cappadocia offers extreme geography and breath-taking landscapes, which were the backdrop to many scenes in the Star Wars II movie.
Exploring underground cities and sanctuaries is, in itself, a marvel to behold and popular attraction in the region.
Early Christians came to the area in the first and second centuries and made countless cave churches, chapels and monasteries. There are over 600 churches scattered through the valleys.
Also in this region are a number of underground cities they used as places for retreat and living spaces until danger had passed. These cities were well-hidden and safe. There were rooms for grain storage, stables, sleeping chambers, kitchens and air shafts. Today these underground marvels are well-lit and fascinating to explore.
The deep canyons and lush fertile valleys of Cappadocia also are ideal for hot air ballooning adventures. Gentle winds can carry you over places that could never be reached otherwise. Turkey's leading balloon tour company, Hot Air Balloons, your tour company that offers spectacular morning flights in near perfect ballooning conditions. Other favorite activities include horseback riding through the rugged region, camping, backcountry hiking and mountaining.
